Multi-barrel attack on drugs syndicates: DRI makes a series of seizures across India

NEW DELHI, JULY 02, 2009: LAST 10 days has been an extraordinary period of bonanza for multiple offices of DRI. In a series of seizures of drugs the Guwahati DRI first got a consignment of as much as nine tonnes of ganja. The consignment was being exported to South Africa in the garb of pineapple pieces and slices.

This was followed by the seizure of 64 kg of hasish on Indo-Nepal border by Patna and Muzzafarpur offices of DRI. The consignment was coming from Nepal and was seized near the border.

The third seizure was made by the Delhi DRI when its sleuths got packets of 8 kg heroin near Alipur. This was concealed in packets of spices and was coming from Punjab border.

Soon the Mumbai DRI seized a 200 kg consignment of psychotropic substances. A factory manufacturing the 'intaxicating' tablets was also sealed in Navi Mumbai.

Then came the report of seizure of 40000 bottles of Phensedyl by Aggartala DRI. This cough-curing and codine-loaded syrup was heading for Bangladesh where liquor consumption is probibited. The syrup manufactured by Nicholas Piramal is sold at premium in B'desh and is used as an effective substitute for liquor.

And finally, the Calicut DRI has seized IC worth Rs 55 lakh from a passenger heading for Sharjah. This was the third such consignment heading for Sharjah.
