GST - Irani tries hard to soothe ruffled feelings of traders

AHMEDABAD, JULY 23, 2017: THE Union Minister for Textiles and Information & Broadcasting, Ms Smriti Zubin Irani, today said that no one can harass a person who wants to come into formal economy through Goods and Service Tax (GST).
While addressing a seminar on 'GST – a Tool for Inclusive Growth' here today, the Minister said past transactions are not to be checked under this system and there will be no punishment for being honest. She further added that if government agencies or officers ask for past transactions or harass anyone, direct action will be taken against them. She also urged traders and business persons to report to the Govt if any such incident occurs.
The Minister observed that GST is not just 'Good and Simple Tax' but is also a 'Great step towards Transparency'. "Beauty of the GST is - it is a destination-based tax and it gives money back through Tax credit"' she added.
The Minister stated that no one wants to be a tax evader, if the system is transparent and simple. She said and that this is the change that the Union Government is bringing in, under the leadership of the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.
