GST Migration - CBEC unhappy with dismal performance

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, MAR 03, 2017: THE process of migration to GST Network is an arduous journey for both the States and the Centre. Such a process was launched by some of the States a few months back and by the CBEC last month. Initially, the process was more geared towards Central Excise migration. From February 9, it is more of Service tax. This process is for Central Excise or Service Tax assessees who did not opt to be migrated through State VAT.

On review of the Zonal Migration position till Feb 25, 2017 the CBEC Member S Ramesh has expressed his displeasure that while the migration figure is in the range of 50% to 90% for majority of States/UTs, the migration with respect of Central Excise/Service Tax assessees through CBEC is a paltry 2.94% in C.E. & 8.22% in S.T.

He has advised all field formations to conduct more seminars and training in local language to encourage taxpayers to migrate early, by 31st March, 2017. Advertisements may also be brought out in local newspapers, TV Channels & FM Radio channels in vernacular to ensure greater reach.

DG Systems, CBEC has launched an Android app "CBEC GST" to inform taxpayers about GST migration. Taxpayers can also use toll-free helpline 1800-1200-232 or send mail at cbecmitra.helpdesk@iccgate.gov.in or local GST Migration Seva Kendras, in case any assistance is needed.

Mr Ramesh has suggested that all such assessees who have not yet activated their provisional IDs may be contacted via phone or email to migrate without further delay.
