Gujarat needs to focus on development of 48 minor ports: Minister

NEW DELHI, SEPT 24, 2016: MINISTER of State for Shipping & Ports,  Mr Mansukh L. Mandaviya, lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of  “Port Led Development ” and said that ports have a huge potential to ensure success of  'Make in India'. Gujarat has highest number of ports in the country.  As Ports are the important key for economic growth and many projects for overall development of ports and coastline have been sanctioned by the Central Government. Mr Mandaviya  said this during  a meeting with Gujarat Maritime Board yesterday.  

During this meeting the Minister discussed the future development of ports in Gujarat and the need to focus on development of 48 minor ports in line with major ports. The details of these sanctioned projects  are as follows:

++ Financial assistance of Rs. 37 crore for construction of new berths (Seats) for increasing passenger service and costal cargo near Porbandar.

++ Rs. 15 crore financial assistance sanctioned for skill development and security of labourers working at Alang Ship Yard.

++ Financial assistance for construction of Marine Ship Building Yard near Bhavanagar.

++ Financial assistance of Rs 117 crore for development of fisheries harbour near Veraval and Ro-Ro ferry dredging work between Ghogha and Dahej.

++ Financial assistance of Rs. 35 crore for road connecting Bhavanagar – Sosiya, Alang Ship Recycling yard under Bharat Mala Project.

++ Financial assistance of Rs. 200 crore from labour welfare fund for construction of hostel, hospital etc.

The Minister also  said that the Government is continuously working on simplifying laws for benefit of people and to promote ease of doing business in the country. Ministry of Shipping and Port is simultaneously working on amending “Inland Vessal Act – 1917” and “Merchant Shipping Act-1958” which will come in existence in near future.
