President of India notifies constitution of GST Council from Sept 15, 2016

NEW DELHI, SEPT 16, 2016: WHAT was approved by the Union Cabinet on Monday has finally been translated into a Notification now. After executing the due diligence, the relevant file reached the Rashtrapati Bhawan yesterday and the President of India, who was himself a powerful dynamo to push the indirect tax reforms as the Union Finance Minister, did not lose time to give his consent for notification of the GST Council as per Article 279A of the Constitution.
As per the Notification, the GST Council which is going to hold its historic first meeting late next week, stands constituted with effect from September 15, 2016.
As proposed and passed by the Parliament, the Union Finance Minister shall be the Chairperson and the Minister of State in charge of the Revenue in the Ministry of Finance shall be a Member. Other Members shall be the Minister in charge of Finance or Taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government.
