Income Tax staffer with wife convicted in refund fraud case

CHENNAI, MAY 29, 2016: THE CBI Court has convicted Mr A.Mathivanan, Office Superintendent, Income Tax Department, Vellore and his wife G.Surekha and sentenced to two years of Rigorous Imprisonment each in three cases. G.Surekha also sentenced one year RI.

The Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai had registered a case against Mr A.Mathivanan, then Senior Tax Assistant in the office of Addl.Commissioner of Income Tax, Vellore for preparing false and fabricated Income tax Refund Orders by adding extra initials, names etc., against the real assessees for huge amount than the real amount and using the same as genuine for the purpose of encashment. He has also opened various SB accounts in fictitious names and encashed the fabricated refund orders showing himself as the authorized representative and thus caused wrongful loss of Rs.2,32,220/- and Rs.9,64,700/- in two instances to the Income Tax Department.

During investigation, it was found that Mr A.Mathivanan had also amassed wealth amounting to Rs.20,23,131/- in the name of his wife which was disproportionate to his known source of income. Offshoot of the main case a disproportionate assets case also registered and filed Charge sheet. The Disproportionate Asset case is also ended in conviction and sentenced two years RI for Mr A.Mathivanan and one year RI for Smt. G.Surekha and imposed total fine of Rs 68,000/- in both cases.
