India arrested 6913 foreigners in 2014, much less than 10043 in 2013: Minister

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, MAY 06, 2015: DETAILS of the number of foreigners arrested during the last three years under various sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and for  violating other provisions of immigration control rules and regulations are given below:-

Year

Number of foreigners arrested

2012

7484

2013

10043

2014

                                           6913 (provisional)

There is no definite trend of increase in the number of foreigners arrested under Foreigners Act, 1946.  While there was an increase in the number of foreigners arrested during 2013 over the previous year, the number of foreigners arrested has declined in 2014. With the implementation of various modules under Immigration, Visa and Foreigners Registration & Tracking (IVFRT) Project, law enforcing agencies are in a better position to know about the foreigners who are violating visa conditions/various rules & regulations while in India and agencies are arresting & deporting such foreigners. Besides use of Hi-tech devices at Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) and emphasis on training of Immigration staff and other law enforcing agencies are also contributing in detection of forgeries caused by foreigners in their travel documents, leading to arrest of foreigners.  Law enforcement agencies maintain a strict vigil on the activities of the foreigners in the country and take appropriate action. Central Government is vested with powers to deport a foreign national under section 3(2) (c) of the Foreigner Act 1946. The powers to identify and deport such foreign nationals have also been delegated to the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations. Detection and deportation of such foreign nationals is a continuous process.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to a question by Mr K.Parasuraman  in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
