Chennai CBI Court convicts two IAS officers

CHENNAI, APR 17, 2014: THE CBI Court has today convicted Mr T M Selvaganapathy Ex-Minister for Rural Development & Local Administration, Government of Tamilnadu and four others including two IAS officers (retired) for two years Rigorous Imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25000/- each in a cheating case filed by CBI.

The Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai registered a case on the directions of High Court of Madras against T.M Selvaganapathy (A1), the then Minister for Rural Development & Local Administration Tamilnadu, Mr J.T. Acharyulu, IAS (A2) former Secretary, Rural Development, Govt of Tamilnadu, Mr M Sathyamurthy, IAS (A3), Former Director, Rural Development, Govt. of Tamilnadu, Mr M.Krishnamurthy (A4), Project Officer (Retired), Mr A. Arokiaraj (A5) and Mr T Bharathi (A6) on the allegations that the above accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy between 1995 and 1996 at Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu to commit criminal misconduct and to cheat the Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu in the matter of construction/erection of cremation sheds under Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), which was not an identified item of work under J.R.Y Scheme by using J.R.Y funds knowing fully well that the construction of cremation sheds was not an identified item under Jawahar Rozgar Yojana and such work should not be entrusted to co-operative societies and that payment of advance to the societies was prohibited by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Though the work should not have been entrusted to Cooperative Societies, Karungulam Cooperative Society was given the work order for erection/ construction of cremation sheds in Nagapattinam District. Further, the payments were made to the said Society through demand drafts. Mr A.Arokiaraj (A5), Special Officer of the Society facilitated Shri Bharathi (A6), who executed the work of erection/construction of cremation sheds though he was not the member of the society, and who executed the said work in a substandard manner through the sub-contractors and not in conformity with the specifications, to encash the demand drafts. Thereby the said accused persons caused wrongful loss to the tune of Rs. 23 lakhs to the Government.

After investigation of the case, charge sheet was filed by CBI against the accused persons.
